Demand from car manufacturers for Pirelli’s noise-cutting PNCS system doubled last year as the number of makes and models with them factory fitted rose to more than 150.

First introduced in 2013 and aimed more at the luxury and prestige makes, the Pirelli Noise Cancelling System has been proven to reduce the roar as a tyre rolls over the road by up to 25%. It works by a special sound absorbing ‘sponge’ Pirelli puts in the tyre which captures and contains vibrations in the air that would otherwise be transmitted inside the car and making that tiring, annoying background noise. Tyres with this system carry special markings on the sidewall with the image of a speaker and sound waves with a bar through them, next to the PNCS symbol. Owners of cars with PNCS are advised to always buy appropriately marked tyres specifically made for their vehicles and to maintain the correct tyre pressures as advised by the manufacturer, as this also helps to contain road noise. Demand among car makers is soaring and from 78 models homologated with it by the end of 2017, there are now more than 150. Maurizio Boiocchi, Pirelli’s Executive Vice President of Technology and Innovation, said: “The presence of technology such as PNCS within our products demonstrates to drivers the importance of choosing tyres that have been specifically developed for their cars, when it comes to changing rubber. That’s the only way in which drivers can get the very best out of their cars, which will then continue to benefit from the characteristics built into them by the engineers responsible for the original design.”
