Difference between car and van tyres

Van tyres are designed to be tough. They possess strengthened sidewalls to handle heavy loads and are durable enough to travel many miles before wearing out. The main difference between car and van tyres is that the latter has a more robust construction. A van tyre can usually be identified by an ‘XL’ or ‘RNF’ embossed on its sidewall, signifying that it is fit for extra loads.

Please bear in mind that many van tyres aren’t just car tyres that have been strengthened – they are specially designed for vans. We stock cheap van tyres from manufacturers like Bridgestone, Dunlop and Goodyear.

Choosing the right van tyres

There are several types of van tyre, each with its own set of characteristics. That means in order to find the right tyres for your vehicle, you first need to consider which tyres are built to best support your van.

Van tyres are typically split into the following three categories:

Small panel van tyres

  • These vans are the most compact. They are typically designed for built-up areas and have tyres strong enough to carry heavy payloads. Small panel tyres, such as the Bridgestone Turanza T005 Driveguard, are suitable for popular vans like the Ford Transit Connect and Mercedes Citan.

Large panel van tyres

  • Large panel vans have bigger payloads and greater cargo volume than small panel vehicles. As such, they require stronger tyres with a larger ply. Some of the most popular large panel van tyres include the Goodyear EfficientGrip Cargo and Bridgestone Duravis R660.

Box van tyres

  • Box vans, such as the Renault Master, require tyres with a much larger ply rating than small panel vehicles. An increased volume capacity means that you will need to use tyres which are reinforced appropriately and have a greater load index rating.
