Battery buying guide

Here are our top tips to help you choose the right battery.

How to choose your battery

The days of a one size fits all car battery are a thing of the past. Today’s vehicles and engines include some of the most advanced features which means that they demand so much for from their batteries; they need to be specialised to vehicle specifics such as electronic equipment and driving styles.

To help you choose, when you add your Vehicle Registration Number in our battery replacement section, our system will match the recommended car battery for your vehicle across a range of brands.  When choosing your battery, you’ll need know whether your car is a start/stop car or check in your logbook if you’re uncertain.  Here’s a guide to the different batteries we can fit at your home or work.

Check your battery measurements

We recommend that you check both your battery size as well as type against your current battery before purchasing

If you’re unsure on what size battery you need and you cant find this information in your log book, please refer to this handy diagram.

The dimensions for each battery will be available to view on the battery product page which can be accessed from the More info buttons.

What are the different kinds of batteries?

At Halfords Tyres on the Drive, we offer 3 main types of battery: Lead Acid, Calcium and Yuasa Silver. How long these batteries can depend on a number of factors such as how far you drive each year, how often you turn your engine on and off or repeatedly letting your battery run down.  Your battery will provide a number of starts before wear out which results in your battery refusing to recharge.

Do you need a Start / Stop battery?

If your engine switches off when you stop at traffic lights or junctions,  your vehicle requires a start/stop AGM or EFG battery.   Your logbook will identify which battery you need if you’re unsure.

These batteries can be more expensive but, can last around an impressive 360,000 starts.  Often these batteries need to be registered with your car’s on-board computer to work properly.   You can rest assured that mobile professionals can replace these batteries easily for you to make sure all your start/stop functions work properly.

Non Start / Stop Batteries

If your car doesn’t need a start / stop battery, here’s more information on the other batteries that may be recommended for your vehicle:

Lead Acid

The most common type of battery, lead acid batteries come as standard in most vehicles. These 20,000 start batteries are covered by a 3 year guarantee and last a long time before they’ll need to be replaced.

Calcium

Slightly better than lead acid batteries, these 30,000 start batteries come with a 4 year guarantee and with 18% more starting power,  can be better for the colder months.

Yuasa Silver

These are our calcium batteries that come with a 5 year guarantee and up to 50,000 starts.  With an additional 33% starting power than an ordinary battery, this is our top end battery.
