What are motorhome tyres?

As the name suggests, motorhome tyres – also called ‘campervan tyres’ – are constructed to resist heavier loads. These offer safety in braking, steering, cornering and acceleration when driving larger vehicles. If, however, a campervan’s tyres have been driven under too much weight, or have not been given the appropriate level of air pressure, they can become unsafe. This could be the case if you buy a second-hand motorhome, or the tyre tread is damaged. In either situation, you should consider using our mobile campervan tyre fitting service; where our experienced technicians can service motorhomes up to a maximum weight of 3.5 tonnes.

What are the differences between motorhome tyres and normal tyres?

While motorhome tyres may look like those used on a conventional car, they are designed to improve durability and stability in camping environments. This higher load carrying capacity comes as a result of strengthened reinforced tyre sidewalls. Tyres originally fitted to motorhomes are usually of a ‘Light Commercial’ ‘(C)’ type and are constructed to cater for the higher loads imposed by campervans. While it’s legal to use conventional tyres on motorhomes, they won’t offer the same sort of safety or fuel savings. Therefore, we don’t recommend deviating from the original specification of your campervan tyres.

Popular campervan tyres include the Michelin Agilis Camping and Continental Vanco Camper.

Why it’s important to check second-hand campervan tyres

The Motorhome Club recommends that campervan tyres are changed when they reach five years old and should never be used if they are older than seven. If you are buying a second-hand motorhome, or you have had your campervan for a few years, you should consider the following points:

  • If tyres aren’t kept in storage for long periods of time, they may not be safe to drive on.
  • The owner may say the vehicle has low mileage; however, the tyres could be several years old, regardless of how much use they have had on the roads.
  • Sunlight and cold temperatures can damage the tyre sidewalls – so asked how they’ve been stored.
  • If a campervan is left parked and motionless for extended periods of time it can cause ‘flat spotting’.
  • If campervan tyres have been used with high pressure (50 psi or more), they should be checked regularly for any warning signs of deterioration.
  • A tyre’s age starts from the time it was made, not the time it was fitted. You can use our tyre markings guide to find out when it was manufactured.
