All terrain tyres are engineered to take on both regular roads and challenging terrains. Buy off road tyres today and have them fitted at home or work.
All terrain tyres (also referred to as ‘4×4 tyres’ and ‘off road tyres’) do exactly what they say on the tin: they are designed to be used on and off road. They are perfect for 4×4 drivers who want to take on challenging conditions and tricky terrains, but equally offer a comfortable ride on smooth surfaces.
Here at Tyres On The Drive, we sell several different types and sizes of off road tyres, all of which are suitable for SUVs and other all terrain vehicles. If you are planning on driving off road or using a tow, all terrain tyres are a great option. Popular 4×4 tyres include the Bridgestone Dueler All Terrain and Goodyear Wrangler A/T.

4×4 tyres have a more robust surface and carcass than conventional tyres. This means they’re much more effective at dealing with rougher tracks and harsh conditions. Similarly, all terrain tyres have a more widely spaced tread pattern and deeper tyre grooves to provide greater grip on slippery surfaces. This extra grip is especially important if you are towing a heavy trailer, such as a horsebox, where the vehicle needs more traction. Unlike conventional tyres, which clog and spin on boggy surfaces, all terrain tyres have larger tread blocks that gain better purchase.
While off road tyres give drivers the freedom and support to take on tough terrains, they aren’t for everybody.
Here are just some of the pros and cons of all terrain tyres:
Pros
Cons
Although most SUVs are used just as family cars and never venture off road, there are many owners who will use a tow bar to pull everything from caravans to boats. This usually means driving onto rough or slippery terrain. It is for these vehicles that manufacturers make all terrain tyres – balancing the different demands and loads put on them. Unlike summer or winter tyres, 4×4 tyres are 50% optimised for normal road surfaces and 50% for adverse terrains.
However, you don’t need to spend 50% of your time off the road to benefit from all terrain tyres. If, for instance, you’re thinking about driving your vehicle on muddy slopes or boggy fields even once a year, we recommend fitting all terrain tyres. In these circumstances, a conventional road tyre will immediately fill up its treads and offer little to no grip.
All terrain tyres are not for extreme 4×4 driving. To do this, you will need some extreme tyres, specifically designed for those environments. Extreme tyres do not function very well on tarmac, but they do allow an SUV owner to experience and enjoy off roading.
