Kormoran is the brand name for a range of passenger car tyres from the Polish company, Stomil-Olsztyn, which began producing tyres in 1959. It signed a joint venture agreement with Michelin in 1997 which 10 years later took a majority share and control. Since then Kormoran has produced more than 1 million tyres and today it makes treads for family cars, vans and SUVs. Among its products are summer and winter-certified tyres, ultra-high performance treads and all-terrain on/off road tyres for 4x4s. Its catalogue is expanding quickly and it has an ambitious programme of new tyres across all its sectors and in a variety of sizes throughout this year and into 2020.
Kormoran’s Road Performance is a mid-sized tyre and has slightly above average performances in the key areas of wet weather grip and fuel efficiency. It is built around an asymmetric tread and has more rigid tread blocks and ribs which keep the tyre stable under cornering, acceleration and braking forces. Both longitudinal and transverse grooves clear away water in the wet and on dry roads the stable shoulder blocks with a ‘grabbing’ edge promote good handling.
Kormoran’s UHP does exactly what it says on the tin and enters the market for Ultra High Performance tyres designed and engineered for some of the most potent supercars. Depending on the tread, the UHP carries speed ratings of V, W and Y which means it has been assessed as being safe at up to 149, 168 and 186 mph respectively. It is based around a newly formulated silica compound which helps with its wet weather grip, it gets a ‘C’ grade for this, and its asymmetric tread optimises the often competing needs to provide good performance in the rain and precise steering and handling on a dry road.
Never one to stand still, Kormoran is adding a lot more choice to its All Season series with new versions of this tyre joining the catalogue all the time. It has a distinctive ‘fish bone’ tread pattern designed to work well across a broad spectrum of weather and road conditions. With this and a silica-rich compound, the Kormoran tyre has an average of a ‘C’ rating for wet performance.
