Pirelli reaches Ferrari milestone

By John SwiftIndustry News12th July 2019

Pirelli celebrated a milestone this month when it unveiled the 10,000th P Zero it has been making for Ferrari’s XX programme where owners can enjoy their track-developed versions of Maranello’s best road cars.

These are some of the most extreme cars in the world – the FXX-K Evo, for example, has more than 1,000 horsepower – and Pirelli has been developing tyres specifically designed for each model since 2011.

From the very first cars in the programme, the FXX, to the most recent FXX-K Evo, the development methodology has changed dramatically. In the beginning Pirelli used a more traditional process but it now mirrors that used for the company’s Formula One tyres and its engineers have been able to rely on data acquired from Ferrari’s F1 simulator as well as on-track testing.

The range goes from a 255/650 R19 tyre for the front of the FXX to 345/725 R20 for the rear of the FXX K Evo and Pirelli has now added an intermediate tyre, the Cinturato, with a new compound and a directional tread pattern for when the track surface is not completely dry and so slicks would not be safe.
