About Mclaren

One of the UK-based car industry’s most spectacular success stories, McLaren Automotive has gone from a standing start to being a leading player in the global supercar market from its very first model, the 12C.

Set up as an independent company distinct from the racing division in 2010, its first car arrived a year later and it has launched a new or derivative model every year since. So successful is the company and so rapid its growth, that in

2017 it sold 3,340 cars which is a small number overall but double what it sold just two years earlier in 2015. Its plans to build and sell 5,000 cars a year look entirely achievable.

Although endowed with all the performance needed to comfortably take on such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Porsche, McLaren also has a reputation for making cars which are remarkably civilised to drive and run as a day-to-day car by the standards of the class.

Popular McLaren Cars

McLaren 570S

Sold in either coupe (hard top) or spider (soft top) form, the 570S uses a Formula One-inspired carbon fibre structure that is both very light and immensely strong. With a 3.8 litre V8 twin turbo developing 570PS, the McLaren has no trouble getting to the far side of 200 mph and needs just 3.2 seconds to get to 60. Grip comes from Pirelli P Zero tyres.

McLaren 570GT

This is perhaps McLaren’s most ‘civilised’ road car which is comfortable, has more than twice the luggage space of the 570S and has suspension designed to make the car a realistic proposition for long, touring journeys. With the same engine as the 570S, it lacks for nothing in the performance stakes, having the same top speed of 204mph but needs just 0.2 seconds to reach 60 mph.

McLaren 540C

The entry price to McLaren ownership, it lacks for nothing in design, engineering or performance. Built with the same light-but-strong carbon fibre structure and with the same V8, albeit with fractionally less power, (it does ‘only’ 199 mph) the 540C is an easy car to use on a daily basis and seems a little roomier and easier to get in and out of than the 570S.

McLaren 720S

This is from McLaren’s Super Series range where the emphasis is very much on performance rather than the surprising practicality of the Sports Series (570 and 540 models). The 720S has a 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 generating 720PS, enough to get it to 212 mph and accelerate from rest to 62 in just 2.9 seconds. McLaren specifies Pirelli P Zero with 245/35/R19 at the front and 305/30/R20 at the rear.
