About Maserati

Founded more than 100 years ago in 1914 by the Maserati brothers, the company which bears their name is renowned for building cars which are glamorous, sporting and now increasingly sought after. It is hard to avoid the comparison with Ferrari but it can be fairly said that while neither make conventionally practical cars, Maserati does offer models which are the nearest to that. For example, its Quattroporte is a four door saloon and its Levante an SUV. It even has a diesel engine in its range!

Just like Ferrari, Maserati also built world-beating racing cars and competition between the two was fierce throughout the 1950s, but in 1993 rivalry developed into partnership when it was taken over by the Fiat group which also owned Ferrari. The first fruits of this link were seen in the Ferrari-derived V8 engines which went under Maserati bonnets and there is still considerable technology transfer between the two in their current models.

Popular Maserati Cars

Ghibli

Named after a hot desert wind, Maserati has had a Ghibli model in its range since the late 1960s and today’s car marks the entry price point to the marque. It is a four door although at first glance can easily be mistaken for a glamorous coupe, offers a choice of a V6 petrol or a diesel and customers buying a brand new one can have it configured to emphasise greater comfort or sportiness as they wish. Both versions run on 235/50 R18 tyres all round.

Levante

Maserati’s first ever SUV and pitched against rivals from the likes of Porsche, Audi or BMW, the Levante uses some of the mechanical parts from the cars and has a genuinely sporting nature for this sector of the market. It has all-wheel drive for tackling rougher terrain or weather conditions and the familiar petrol or diesel option, but this time with the petrol V6 in either 350 or 430 hp form and an interior that has been voted one of the ten most luxurious in the world by American car magazine, WardsAuto. The 350 hp Levante and the diesel run on 255/60 ZR18 all round, the 430 V6 on 265/50ZR19 (front) and 295/45 ZR19 (rear).

Quattroporte

As its name indicates, this is a four-door saloon which has a Ferrari built V6 engine under its shapely bonnet. Or for those who prefer less frequent trips to the filling station, a V6 diesel. Pitched at the top end of this sector of the market, the Quattroporte is luxurious but suitably sporty too because after all, it may be a saloon but it is still a Maserati. Both versions run on 245/45 R19 (front) and 275/40 R19 (rear).

Gran Turismo

Powered by a 4.7 litre V8 and available in either coupe or convertible form, the Gran Turismo is a 2+2, (space for two small seats behind) and with a top speed not far off 190 mph is a high performance car in any version. For those who want an even sportier chassis, Maserati offers the MC version. The Gran Cabrio is scarcely any slower but does offer top-down driving for those who enjoy the wind in their hair. All versions run on 245/35 R20 (front) and 285/35 R20 (rear).
