About Kia

Two events transformed Kia’s image and fortunes in the UK; the arrival of the cee’d hatchback and the introduction of its revolutionary seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty. The Korean company has not looked back since and today it is regarded as a manufacturer up there with the very best for build quality and owner satisfaction. Kia’s recently arrived Stinger GT marks a move upmarket and hints at an ambition to expand into the more premium end of the business. Given its recent past few would bet against it succeeding.

Popular Kia Cars

Picanto

Kia’s five door city car starts at less than £10,000 and comes with a choice of a 1.0 or 1.25 litre engine. It has the peace of mind and improved second hand value which comes from its seven years/100,000 mile warranty and is generally well specced for the money. Features can include sat nav with a seven inch display screen, wireless charging for compatible smartphones, a reversing camera and Bluetooth hands free with voice recognition. The Picanto rides on 175/65 R14, 185/55 R15 and 195/45 R16 tyres for 14, 15 and 16 inch rims.

Cee'd

The car which proved to the world beyond any doubt that Kia could make a hatchback as good as anything from VW or Ford, the latest generation cee’d is now sold as hatchback, coupe and estate versions. It has a full range of engine options, very good spec levels and is renowned as being among the best performers for reliability and owner satisfaction in this sector of the market. The hatchback rides on 195/65 R15, 205/55 R16 and 225/45 R17 for 15, 16 and 17 inch rims.

Stonic

This is a mid-size SUV and a recent addition to Kia’s model range, it majors on driver and safety aids. Depending on the spec, the Stonic has touchscreen sat nav, lane departure warning if you drift over the white line, a driver tiredness warning, reversing camera and even a heated steering wheel. And if you wonder where the name comes from, Kia says it is an amalgam of ‘Sporty’ and ‘Tonic’. It is available with either a 1.0 petrol or 1.4 diesel engine and both versions ride on 205/55 R17 tyres.

Optima

This is Kia’s upper-mid sized saloon that also comes as an estate. Most versions have a 1.7 litre diesel but there are petrol/electric hybrid versions available too at the higher end of the price range. The Optima is roomy and comprehensively equipped. Depending on the model, it offers heated and ventilated seats, a sat nav system that offers alternative routes if there is a delay ahead and all the safety features expected of a car aimed at the business driver. Kia fits 215/55R17 and 235/45R18 tyres.

Niro

This cross-over SUV was the first hybrid from Kia, with an eye on the future its chassis and basic structure was designed from the start to be only used for hybrid or electric cars. The Niro is a parallel hybrid which means that both the petrol engine and electric motor work together most of the time but it can operate in battery-only mode for short distances. From April 2019 a battery-only and zero emission e-Niro will be added and which Kia says will have a range of around 280 miles on a single charge. It was voted What Car? magazine’s Car of the Year 2019. The standard Niro runs on 205/60 R16 or 225/45 R18 tyres and the e-Niro on 215/55 R17s.

Sportage

This is another key model in Kia’s recent history and through its successive generations has won numerous awards for both new and used SUVs. It is Kia’s best selling car in the UK and comes in both two- or four-wheel drive with the latter popular among caravanners or drivers who need something robust for going off-road. The Sportage comes in 16 different versions based on six engines, three gearboxes and five trim lines.

Carens

The Carens is Kia’s mid-size MPV people carrier with seven seats which pitches it against rivals such as the VW Touran. It has three individual sliding and reclining centre-row seats and two separate seats in the rear. This is the third generation Carens and was heavily updated inside and out in 2017 and now features much better connectivity, safety and driver aids. It has a 1.6 petrol engine which uses 205/55 R16 tyres and a 1.7 diesel in two power outputs, 114 bhp (205/55 R16) and 139 bhp (225/45 R17).

Sorento

The third generation Sorento is Kia’s SUV flagship, with seven seats and intelligent all-wheel drive coming as standard. It moves Kia towards the premium end of the market with interior that can include a panoramic sunroof, heated front and outer rear seats, leather trim and ten speaker sound system. Depending on the version, the Sorento has 235/65 R17, 235/60 R18 and 235/55 R19 tyres.

Stinger

The Stinger is Kia’s surprise car, a sporty looking GT that is intended more as a brand image builder than adding sales numbers. For the first time in a Kia sold in the UK it has rear-wheel drive and a choice of either a diesel or petrol engine. The Stinger is a comfortable car with semi-sports performance. Kia fits it with 225/45 R18 tyres for both diesel and petrol versions.

Soul

Kia’s Soul is a compact SUV designed for urban use and offers the unusual feature of also being available as a pure electric vehicle too. There is a generous variety of trim and spec levels to choose from, upper-end models have luxury features such as leather and heated seats. Depending on the car, the Soul goes from 205/60R16 to 235/45R18 tyres.
