The Jaguar XF is a multiple award winner in a market sector packed with extremely capable cars, which shows just how good this coupe-styled saloon is. The BMW 4 Series will run it close but it can show most rivals how to take a bend sweetly and how to cope with the bumps and ruts of our roads. Jaguar Land Rover’s engines are modern and clean, it has a decent interior and looks that don’t seem to date.

The new E-Pace puts Jaguar right in the heart of the smaller premium badge SUV market and with some of the styling cues taken from the F-Type two seater, it certainly justifies the ‘sports’ element of the Sports Utility Vehicle label. In price it is similar to the XE saloon but will undoubtedly be a much bigger sales success, adding some volume and profit to Jaguar’s sales record. It is based on a Land Rover rather than Jaguar chassis but handles and rides more like a car. There is a strong sense of sitting high-up which is an SUV trait but it feels more pronounced in the E-Pace than in some competitors such as the BMW X1. The interior is instantly recognisable as Jaguar with familiar info screens and controls and it is a comfy car to be in.

Jaguar is first out of the blocks among the established car makers to marry the two main strands of the global industry at the moment; SUVs and electric powertrains. The i-Pace has no internal combustion engine at all and runs purely on battery power, which can be recharged from a domestic or public supply and by its on-board generator which harvests energy as the car brakes and converts it to electrical power for the battery. The i-Pace is only now just starting to come onto the market, so it is too new to have much real-world data on it, but what can be said is that Jaguar claims a range of almost 300 miles on a single charge and a 0 to 60 time of less than five seconds. It remains to be seen if customers will find this a sufficiently practical proposition, but if they do this car will spearhead a whole new direction in the car market.
