About Audi
In 1971 Audi coined the advertising slogan Vorsprung durch Technik, Progress through Technology, and it is a motto it has lived by since. By the end of that decade it had introduced cars with a five cylinder engine, turbocharging and the quattro four wheel drive transmission. Since then it led the industry by adding fully galvanised rust-proofed body shells, designing the most aerodynamic volume-built saloon of its time, direct-injection diesel and later petrol engines, introducing aluminium construction on a mass produced car (the A8 executive saloon) and the first hybrid vehicles. In motorsport it has triumphed in world rallying and the Le Mans 24 Hours and is today positioned as a premium
brand, active in every sector of the car market from city cars to SUVs to supercars. Audi has been part of the VW group since 1966 but its true origins go back much further. In 1932 four car manufacturers based in southern Germany (Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer) merged and gave rise to the four interlocked ring logo, which adorns Audi to this day. Students of auto history may like to know that the founder of Audi was August Horch, one of the industry’s pioneers. Having a company with his own name already, competition laws meant he could not apply it to a second so he translated his name into Latin. In German horch means hark, or listen, and in Latin that become Audi. Hence the name we know today.

Audi A1
The Audi A1 is the brand’s smallest model and the introduction to the Audi range. It is sold as a three or five door supermini with a premium-feel and well equipped interior befitting its prices. Engines range from an economical 1.0 litre petrol unit to sportier 1.4 versions and a variety of diesel options. As standard it rides on wheels sized from 15 to 18 inches. The A1 is factory fitted with tyre sizes from 185/60 R15 for the more basic versions and up to 225/35 R18 for the sports ones with wider and lower profile tyres.
Audi A3
The Audi A3 is based on a VW Golf but with a more upmarket interior including Audi’s exceptional Virtual Cockpit digital dashboard. It introduces the group’s hybrid e-tron technology and also the quattro four wheel drive and is sold in a huge variety of versions. The Audi A3 is a multiple award winner and is this year’s What Car? Best Family car in the over-£23,000 category. Wheel rims sizes go from 16 to 19 inches and tyres from 205/55 R16 to 235/35 R19 for the sports RS 3 model.
Audi A4
The A4 is Audi’s mid-range car and although a four-door saloon, it is also the first model to offer an estate version in the company’s range with the Avant and also a crossover model with the Allroad Quattro. Audi A4s have an engine range covering everything from a 1.4 to a 3.0 litre so there is a vast spectrum of models. Wheel rim sizes go from 16 to 20 inches. Tyres for the standard (non RS) A4 saloon and Avant range from 225/50 R17 to 245/35 R19 and for the Allroad Quattro from 225/55 R17 to 245/45 R18.
Audi A5
With the Audi A5 the company starts to offer its executive coupes as this model comes as either a sleek two-door or as a five-door hatchback. A strong seller in its market sector, the A5 is a rival to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz C Class and BMW 4 Series.
Audi A6
The Audi A6 is a bigger version of the 5 and comes in the same saloon, Avant (estate) and Allroad Quattro crossover options. Always popular in the company car market, the premium Audi comes with luxury trim as standard but for those wanting it, the V8 engined RS 6 will deliver supercar performance with the extra grip of the quattro four-wheel drive. For tyres sizes, the A6 saloon and Avant go from 225/55 R17 to 255/35 R20, the Allroad from 235/55 R18 to 255/40 R19 and the RS 6 has 275/35 R20 and 285/30 R21 treads.
Audi A7
One step down from the A8 flagship of the saloon car range, the Audi A7 Sportback is an elegant four door saloon but with a coupe’s sleek styling. With quattro four wheel drive and either a petrol or a diesel option with a mild hybrid system. Audi fits the A7 with 19 or 20 inch rims depending on trim level.
Audi A8
A technical masterpiece, the latest generation Audi A8 is among the most sophisticated vehicles yet built and takes the motoring world a big step nearer autonomous cars which can drive themselves. So advanced is the A8 that some of the technology in it such as its self-controlling steering function is not yet legal to use in this country until new laws are passed. Audi has built the A8 around a lightweight aluminium chassis and it rides on 18 inch forged alloy wheels as standard which reduce the unsprung weight to help its ride.
Audi Q2
The Audi Q2 is its entry level SUV which is built around the A1 but featuring a raised ride height to give it the ‘crossover’ look and it is among the market leaders in its sector. Tyre sizes for the Audi Q2 go from 215/60 R16 to 235/40 R19 depending on engine and trim specification.
Audi Q3
A step up in size and sophistication from the Q2, Audi’s Q3 is a five door crossover with a distinctly coupe-like sloping roof line. Fitted with a range of the VW group’s petrol and diesel engines, manual or semi-automatic transmissions and the option of quattro all-wheel drive, the Q3 is an impressive performer. Tyres sizes for the Q3 go from 235/55 R17 to 255/40 R19.
Audi Q5
The multi-award wining Audi Q5 is a class favourite and packed with advanced driver aids and safety technology. It is the biggest of Audi’s five-seat SUVs and is a competitor to the likes of the Land Rover Discovery Sport, BMW X3, Porsche Macan or Jaguar F-PACE in the prestige end of the SUV market. Depending on specification and trim options, the Audi Q5 will run on 18 or 19 inch rims as standard.
Audi Q7
The Audi Q7 is the biggest of its SUV range and is a seven seater car which shares some of its mechanical components with the Bentley Bentayga and new Skoda Kodiaq. With three rows of seats, the Q7 will take a family in luxury while still leaving room for holiday luggage or an outdoor event. One version is the Q7 e-tron with hybrid energy saving and power assistance and this new type of powerplant is ideally suited to relatively big and heavy SUVs. Audi fits the Q7 with tyre sizes starting with 225/55 R19s up to the mighty 285/40 R22.
Audi TT
Few other cars are as closely identified with their market as the Audi TT which has simply dominated the mid-size coupe sector since first going on sale. As either a hard-top coupe or convertible, in standard or Porsche-rivalling TT RS form, the Audi is one of the best selling sportscars of the past 20 years and has won too many awards in both the new and used car markets to list. Brilliant engines, elegant styling, good value for money, a lovely chassis in the latest generation cars and the clever digital cockpit make the Audi TT a clear sector leader. Tyre sizes for the Audi TT go from 245/40 R18 245/30 R19.
