What are budget tyres?

The term ‘budget’ usually refers to the industry’s cheapest tyres. This means that they rarely possess the same levels of engineering or performance as premium tyres. The main benefit of buying low cost tyres is that they offer value for infrequent drivers. This is a fantastic way to save money in the short term, and could prove useful if you need a quick tyre replacement. It’s just worth remembering that cheap tyres will often have poorer longevity and inferior economy ratings.

Some tyre dealerships class ‘budget tyres’ as second-hand or part-worn. We don’t. All our tyres are brand new and checked thoroughly. How do budget tyres work?

One of the main differences between budget tyres and more expensive models is the level of research and testing involved – the key to producing best-in-class tyres. Generally, cheap tyres have less rigorous testing. This doesn’t mean they are unsafe to use, they just won’t last as long or provide the same grip as premium or even mid-range tyres.

Here are some other factors that are affected by buying budget tyres:

  • Less comfortable
  • Noisier
  • Poorer fuel economy
  • Higher wear
  • Inferior cornering

While these factors may not be noticeable in dry weather conditions, you might feel less grip and increased braking distances in wet weather. You can rest assured that our budget tyre range is covered by the same manufacturer guarantees that apply to all of our tyre brands.

Should I buy budget tyres?

Although budget tyres are less grippy and versatile as more expensive tyres, they still offer practicality for low mileage drivers. If you aren’t used to driving on motorways, or you primarily stick to main roads, budget tyres offer safety and good handling. Cheap tyres are suited to those who make small urban journeys at slower speeds.

This is because budget tyre treads tend to wear away more quickly than more expensive alternatives.

You might want to consider purchasing value tyres if the following apply:

  • You drive mainly in built up areas
  • You don’t drive long distances
  • You don’t have a powerful car
  • You want cheap tyres

How can I identify budget tyres?

You can identify a budget tyre either by its price or by referring to its EU Tyre Label. In terms of price, a budget tyre is usually around 20% cheaper than mid-range brands and around 40% cheaper than premium.

An EU Tyre Label grades a tyre from A (best) to G (worse) depending on fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise emissions. You can expect a cheap tyre to have a rating of C to G for each criterion. Budget tyres tend to produce medium to high levels of external noise (usually in the region of 70 dB) and emit larger quantities of carbon dioxide.
