Mercedes-Benz’s microcar brand, Smart, has performed better and survived for longer than many predicted when it came to the UK in the late 1990s. The concept for the cars actually came from the watch company, Swatch, who thought there was a market for small, chic city cars using the same manufacturing and customisation methods it used to great success in its own industry.
As it happens, the name stands for ‘Swatch Mercedes Art’. The original formula of having tiny cars powered by small engines but ideal for urban roads and parking is still used in today’s models and as many owners will tell you, a rear-engined, rear wheel drive car can be a lot of fun to drive as well as frugal.
As its name suggests the Smart fortwo is a microcar for two people but it comes in both hard- and soft-top (cabrio) form and with a three cylinder, 900cc engine in two states of tune, with 71 or 90hp, and for those wanting more excitement there is a 109hp version as well. Smart is now adding an electric version badged EQ.
A slightly stretched chassis and two extra doors give a clue about this Smart which is a more family-themed version of the two-seater but it is still a compact, easily parked and manoeuvred car around town. Other than that, it has the same engine options as the fortwo including the EQ derivative.
