About Vauxhall

One of the longest established car makers of any, since late 2017 Vauxhall has been part of the PSA group (Peugeot-Citroen) and its range of cars and vans will presumably become more integrated with the French manufacturer as they move forward, especially in the development of electric vehicles where development costs are high. It makes far more commercial sense to spread the costs over as many brands

and models as possible. Together with Ford, Vauxhall has long been a market leader and today sells in all the mainstream sectors, with city cars and small to mid sized hatchbacks, a new range of SUVs and light commercials. Some of its models, such as the Corsa and Astra, are household names and among the best known in the industry.

Popular Vauxhall Cars

VIVA

The cheapest of Vauxhall’s range, this five door hatchback revives a famous nameplate and is aimed at families valuing practicality above style. Its upright stance and relatively square edged styling maximise interior room and make the back seats more adult-friendly. The VIVA is pitched as an alternative to rivals such as the Hyundai i10, Volkswagen Up, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1. It uses a three cylinder, 1.0 litre ECOTEC engine also found in the Corsa and ADAM models. It comes in two trim levels, both having a tyre pressure monitoring system. It uses 15 or 16 inch wheels.

Adam

A stylish city car, the three-door ADAM is renowned for the vast number of personalisation options and combinations it can be ordered in, making it unlikely an owner will come across another with identical colour or spec. It uses 1.2 and 1.4 litre engines and the range extends to the sporty ADAM S which has 150 PS from its turbocharged 1.4.

Corsa

A firm favourite among the Vauxhall range since the first one made its debut in 1993, more than two million have been sold in the UK in the 25 years since its launch, the equivalent of nine purchases an hour. Today the Corsa comes as either a three or a five door and has a wide range of derivatives, from economy-focused models to the 150 PS GSi model which has twice their power, and the truly extreme version, the 205 PS VXR. In summer 2018, Vauxhall simplified the Corsa range to seven different spec levels and added new Euro 6.2 compliant engines, new trims and integrated sat nav as standard on up-level models.

Astra

The Astra has been a core model for Vauxhall since the first one in 1981 since when more than four million over seven generations have rolled off the assembly line at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire. Remarkably, it is estimated that one in four of us has either owned or driven an Astra. The current generation has won numerous consumer and industry awards and was the European Car of the Year in 2016. It is sold as both a five door hatchback and as an estate and in a huge number of trim/engine options.

Crossland X

The Crossland X arrived in summer 2017 to strengthen Vauxhall’s presence in the SUV market. It is a mid-size vehicle, built on the same chassis as the Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C4 and with some of the same engines. Built as a rival to cars such as the Nissan Juke and Suzuki Vitara, as well as its two French stablemates from the PSA group which owns them and Vauxhall.

Insignia

Vauxhall’s big hatchback, its Sport Tourer estate version is another multi-award winner in its range and is an excellent car blessed with a classy and comfortable interior, an excellent chassis that rides and handles well and decent engines. It may suffer from its badge image not matching the likes of Audi or BMW, but for those willing to look beyond that the Insignia is a very capable five seater and the estate version is huge.

Mokka X

The Mokka X is Vauxhall’s rival to the likes of the VW T-Roc, Suzuki Vitara or Renault Captur and is a compact SUV. It is sold in six spec levels, has a range of engine choices, and is usually regarded as being a competent, if not class leading, performer on the road. By the standards of the sector it has a roomy interior and a good amount of comfort and convenience tech. Few would claim it to be the best car in the class and because of that it usually has very competitive pricing to stand out from crowd.

Zafira Tourer

This is a seven seater MPV people carrier whose reputation has been marred by its well publicised recalls over fire risks, started by a fault in its heating system. Approaching 250,000 were recalled but as of November 2018 a considerable number have still yet to be rectified. Otherwise, the latest Zafira which was relaunched in 2016 after a major upgrade, is reasonably competent in its role, perhaps not quite as good as the Ford S-MAX is it pitched against, but a sizeable step forwards from its predecessor. The Flex7 seating allows multiple choices of how the seats are configured to give maximum cargo or passenger space as the needs dictate. It rides and handles well, has competitive engines and is a very good buy. The same holds true of a second hand version but only if you are confident the rectification work has been done.
