About Tesla

Few companies ever in any field can have been as revolutionary as Tesla, the American electric-only car maker set up in 2003, which has resolutely stuck to its guiding principle that low/zero emission transport is the only viable solution, so long as people want personal mobility. The motor industry is adapting to seismic changes in legislation, forcing them away from internal combustion engines and into electric. Although there are still many questions around the cost, range

and practicality of battery cars, there is no question that they will replace diesel and petrol power and faster than perhaps many, believe. For the time being however, the choice of EVs (electric vehicles) is very limited but Tesla is among them. The Model 3 – a genuinely affordable mass-market EV – has arrived in the UK and promises to bring Tesla to a much wider audience by being no more expensive than a mid-range BMW and produced in greater volume than any other of its products.

Popular Tesla Cars

Model S

For the time being Tesla’s mainstay, the Model S is a comfortable, roomy car that competes in Audi/BMW/Mercedes territory and once you get your head around its technology, an impressive car. Buyers can choose from one of four battery specs, varying in output and range but can all be recharged from a household socket, courtesy of a home charger most buyers will have, or by the Supercharger network available to Tesla customers. From one extreme to another, one version of the Model S has a claimed range of almost 400 miles, while another harnesses the vast and instant torque of an electric motor plus the four wheel drive grip to crack the 0 to 60 time in 2.5 seconds, which puts it among the very fastest accelerating road cars yet built.

Model X

Seven seater SUV which makes the best use of the lack of bulky engine, gearbox and drivetrain of conventionally-powered rivals to offer the biggest passenger/luggage space of any in the class. It has impressive range and, where conditions allow, even more impressive performance with the same 2.5 second 0 to 60 time of the Model S. Owners will presumably rarely call on this potential and prefer to cruise along, enjoying the uncanny smoothness and total lack of vibration other than any transmitted from the road through the tyres, a characteristic of electric cars.
