About Suzuki

This Japanese giant can trace its history back more than 100 years to when Michio Suzuki set up his company making weaving looms for the country’s booming silk business and in 1952 it diversified into motor vehicles for the first time with a 36cc motorbike. Today it is a top 10 automobile maker on the global stage, making around 3 million cars in 2016. Suzuki has been importing into the UK since 1963, initially with motorbikes but soon followed by cars, ATVs and boat engines.

In 2017 it had its best ever year in this country with record car sales of 40,343 units, a six per cent growth year on year. Suzuki enjoys a reputation for its small and medium sized SUVs which have more robust off-road capabilities than more urban-based designs and for its small, economical cars. In 2017 trade magazine, Motor Trader, voted it the Carmaker of the Year.

Popular Suzuki Cars

Celerio

Suzuki’s little city car is a five door hatchback powered by a 1.0 litre petrol engine which averages 66 mpg apart from the ultra-efficient DualJet version which can eke out an average of 79 miles on a gallon. All versions have sub 100g/km CO2 emissions. For the past two years the Celerio has been given ‘Best Buy’ status in the sub-£9,500 category by What Car? with judges saying: “All things considered, the Celerio is a serious amount of car for the cash, Suzuki throws in everything you would realistically need – even on entry level SZ2 trim – and it makes a well-rounded City Car choice.” It has 14 inch alloy rims and Suzuki fits each Celerio with a Tyre Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) to warn of an underinflated or punctured tyre.

Ignis

Suzuki’s small SUV cross over has won a multitude of awards. Auto data analysts at cap hpi named it one of the best for avoiding depreciation, in a list that included Porsche, Lexus and Audi. The hybrid model – a rare offering in this sector – said this version should hold almost 80 per cent of its value at one year/10,000 miles. More than 70 international jurors voted it Runner-Up in the Urban Car category of the 2017 World Car of The Year. Among its many advantages is its safety where it has the maximum five star rating in the EuroNCAP tests. One reason is that it has a Dual Camera Brake Support (DCBS), stereo cameras mounted each side of the rear view mirror which work like a human eye. They can detect objects ahead including pedestrians and alert the driver or even apply the brakes fully if necessary.

Swift

Long a mainstay of the Suzuki range, the latest and third generation Swift builds on the reputation of the previous two for being a solidly reliable, capable, ultra-efficient and well equipped small family hatchback and it has the industry recognition to prove it. It has a lightweight but strong construction and has three engine options, a 1.0-litre three cylinder turbo engine in standard or hybrid form and a 1.2. The SZ5 version with this engine is even available with four wheel drive, a most unusual feature in this sector of the market.

Swift Sport

The recently released performance version and a stand alone model, the Sport has a torquey 1.4 litre turbo engine and suspension and steering tuned to match its more powerful and sporty performance. It has a tough act to follow as its immediate predecessor was voted Best Buy in the sub-£15,000 category no fewer than six years in a row by What Car? Magazine. It runs on 195/45 R17 tyres.

Baleno

Suzuki’s mid-size five door hatchback is notable for being built with a modern and lightweight structure which can tip the scales as much as 200 kgs lighter than some rivals with enormous benefits for its fuel economy. It too has a hybrid version to offer buyers. Among its features are a standard-fit TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system).

Vitara

Perhaps the best known Suzuki model, the Vitara compact SUV is another serial award winner and is regarded as the class standard setter despite the arrival of many new competitors. Consumer magazine What Car? Awarded it Best Buy status for the third year running in the small SUV sector, with the 1.6 SZ4 being especially praised. Apart from its mix of on- and off-road abilities which make it popular with caravanners, the Vitara is also a multiple winner in ‘True MPG’ tests where cars are  assessed to see how closely their claimed fuel economy figures match those achieved in reality.

SX4 S-cross

A bigger SUV than the Vitara and with ALLGRIP four wheel drive available on all versions, the S-Cross was recently given a major facelift and overhaul. Even though it is a relatively light car by SUV standards and has a low towing capacity it is still an award winner with caravanners with the 1.4-litre ALLGRIP model winning the ‘Best Budget 4X4’ category at the 2017 Towcar of the Year Award.
