About Subaru

With the exception of the Toyota-derived BRZ sports coupe, Subaru makes its name in the 4×4 SUV market but even with that sector booming the Japanese company has lost sales and in 2017 not one of its models managed to get into four figures for sales. It registered just 2,679 new cars to take 0.11% of the total market, a drop of 26% on 2016. New models are hoped to get it back on track.

Popular Subaru Cars

XV

The refreshed XV was launched in early 2018, but stays true to the established Subaru formula of having four wheel drive and a raised ride height for better ground clearance when going off road. What it doesn’t have is a diesel anymore, or a hybrid, but two petrol engines, a 1.6 and a 2.0 litre. It has received lukewarm reviews although praised for its reasonable ride quality. A diesel would be more suitable for true off-roading. Subaru specify 225/60R17 and 225/55R18 tyres.

Forester

Due to be replaced in late 2018/early 2018, the Forester has been a mainstay of the Subaru brand for more than 20 years and was a favourite among vets, farmers and others needing to get to and from off-road destinations. The current model remains probably the very best off-roader in this sector of the market but has also fallen behind what the modern buyer looks for. In such a competitive sector with cars like the Mazda CX-5 or Audi Q3, Subaru needs the new car soon.

Impreza

Once Subaru’s best known car thanks to its involvement with the World Rally Championship, the latest Impreza is a recently arrived hatchback to take on the Ford Focus, VW Golf, Vauxhall Astra sector. It has excellent safety standards, a very good amount of room inside, a soft and comfortable ride and it has a strong reputation for reliability, backed by a five year/100,000 mile warranty. Critics have rounded on it though for poorly performing engines, CVT rather than manual gearboxes and poor fuel economy on account of its all-wheel drive.

Levorg

An estate car pitched against rivals such as the Skoda Superb estate, the Subaru is one of the marque’s most distinctive looking cars, is roomy, well equipped for the money, has the traditional Subaru all- wheel drive and excellent safety levels. On the other hand, it only has one engine option (1.6 petrol) and one trim level and with the CVT gearbox it is not tax-friendly in the company car market with low mpg and high CO2.

Outback

An off-road estate car, the Outlander was recently refreshed and more than holds its own against rivals such as the Skoda Octavia Scout. It has acres of room inside, petrol and a diesel engine, a reasonable ride, one of the best Subaru interiors and genuine go-anywhere capability. With that power and four wheel grip it is a good car for anyone towing a horsebox or caravan.

BRZ

This is Subaru’s version of the Toyota GT86 on which it is very closely based. Subaru’s version is sharper edged with harder suspension and a more urgent way about it. It retains the extraordinary balance of the rear-wheel drive GT86 but definitely has its own character. It is well appointed inside but most of all, it is a proper sports car to drive.
