About Skoda

Skoda’s transformation from being something of a byword for poor build quality and suffering from a rock-bottom image began in the mid 1990s, when the first car it built since being taken within the VW empire was launched, the Octavia. The Octavia was an Audi A4 or VW Golf in all but name and made Skoda a force to be reckoned with. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, using its badge on several VW group models to great effect, and with its latest SUVs

the brand is moving into a price territory unthinkable just a few short years ago. As a measure of how well it delivers on its brief of delivering cars its customers want at prices they can afford, consider that in 2017 its Citigo, Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq were all named as the best in their respective classes by the consumer-oriented Carbuyer website.

Popular Skoda Cars

Citigo

The smallest and entry level Skoda, this is its version of the VW Up! and essentially the same car. In its Skoda guise it has won numerous awards in both the new and used car markets for its combination of space, affordability, engine choice and running costs. It has also been given an unusual but highly significant recognition by being named as the safest first car for newly qualified drivers by Co Op Insurance, thanks in part to Skoda offering its City Safe pack which helps novice drivers avoid urban speed bumps. Sold in both three and five-door versions, the Citigo uses a 1.0 litre engine which again has different power outputs to choose from. Tyres sizes for the Citigo are 165/70 R14 and 185/55 R15.

Fabia

A mainstay of the Skoda range for some 20 years, the latest Fabia has been recently refreshed and its version of the VW Polo now comes in five trim grades, three engine options and in both hatchback and estate body styles. The heavily updated car has had a complete overhaul of its safety, connectivity and infotainment features, is more comfortable and gets the very latest engines – all petrol no diesel. The Fabia is another Skoda favourite with the car trade, especially the second hand sector, where it is a multiple award winner.

Rapid

A new model in the Skoda range which slots into a gap between the Fabia and the Octavia, the Rapid is aimed at drivers who want the compact external dimensions of the former but the interior space of the latter. Skoda classes it as a compact car and it has few rivals in terms of the amount of room inside. The Rapid is also available in estate form, badged as the Spaceback. Power comes from the familiar 1.0 litre engine used extensively throughout the VW group and a 1.4 petrol or diesel, it has a very comprehensive list of safety and connectivity features and rides on 15, 16 or 17 inch wheels.

Octavia

The 1996 Octavia was the first Skoda built since the company was taken over by VW and it was the foundation for the company’s success since, with more than 5 million being sold in more than 100 countries. The current model was heavily revised in early 2017 but remains true to the core appeal of Octavias that they offer tremendous value for money, space, comfort and bomb proof reliability. It is sold in a variety of guises, from eco-friendly to the sporty vRS and a 4×4 version, and from ‘relatively’ basic spec to the luxurious where leather seats and heated steering wheel are among the comfort features.

Karoq

This is the newest model in the Skoda line up and another contender in the busy compact SUV market and slots in beneath the bigger Kodiaq. The Karoq has class-leading levels of driver aid and connectivity technology, a programmable digital dashboard and with the Varioflex seating system all three rear seat units can move independently, can be folded flat or removed completely to free-up a van-like cargo capacity.

Superb

The Superb is Skoda’s biggest saloon/estate and aimed at the business car driver, its equivalent of the VW Passat. As expected of a car in this sector, it bristles with comfort and convenience features and new range of infotainment options that provide complete smartphone integration for owners.

Kodiaq

The Kodiaq is the biggest car Skoda makes, a seven seater SUV sharing many components with the Audi A8 (and Bentley Bentayga) but despite similarities with them it has the biggest cargo capacity of any in the class, not just those two. As the brand’s flagship model and one competing in the executive car market, it has every feature designed to make life on board as easy, safe, comfortable and convenient as possible and the Kodiaq has 4×4 technology and a genuine off-road ability.
