About Peugeot

Peugeot can claim to be one of the longest established manufacturers as its founder Armand Peugeot made his first vehicle in 1889. True, it was steam powered and had only three wheels but it was at least mechanised transport. By 1891 it had become the first car in the world to be ‘mass manufactured’ with 64 built! Today Peugeot is somewhat bigger and with its sister company in the PSA group, Citroen, it is Europe’s second biggest car maker. Last year the group expanded again by taking over the ailing Vauxhall/Opel business from former American owners, GM, and it has strong links in the fast emerging giant market of China.

It has had some globally successful cars such as the 205 and 206 small hatchbacks, with the later one selling more than 7 million. Although its core business is making family cars, the Peugeot name has also been seen on the top step of the winners’ podium in world rally championships and the Le Mans 24 Hours, proving that it knows a thing or two about durability as well as performance. Like its sister brand, today Peugeot is active in all the mainstream market sectors and to underline the quality of its products, in 2017 its 3008 SUV cross over was voted the European Car of the Year, the fifth time Peugeot has taken this award.

Popular Peugeot Cars

Peugeot 108

Developed with Citroen (C1) and Toyota (Aygo), the Peugeot 108 is a three or five door city car popular among first-time buyers because of its low running costs. Safety technology such as an automatic emergency braking system and a tyre pressure warning alert are available. It’s 1.0 litre engine has an official average fuel consumption of almost 70 mpg, it has CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km making it tax friendly and has the choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

Peugeot 208

Peugeot’s entry in the incredibly competitive supermini sector pushes for sales against the likes of the SEAT Ibiza, VW Polo and Ford Fiesta. The five door 208 has some good tech including an automatic parking system. Sensors measure whether the gap you want to go not is big enough and if it is the car will take over the steering so all the driver has to do is operate the brake and accelerator. It features good connectivity, 3D sat nav with live time warnings on traffic jams and suggested alternative routes.

Peugeot 308

Peugeot’s mid-size hatchback introduces the company’s i-Cockpit which is designed to de-clutter the driver’s environment and let them focus on, and instantly access, the essential information needed. Under the bonnet is a range of Peugeot’s PureTech engines, small capacity but ultra-efficient units which have been voted International Engine of the Year in 2015, 2016 and 2017 for the 1.0L to 1.4 litre category. The Peugeot 308 is also made in estate form, the SW.

Peugeot 508

Sharp styled five door fastback rivalling the Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Insignia and, Peugeot hopes, lower spec Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series exec saloons. It returns to  Peugeot’s strengths not seen for several years of combining a typically French smooth ride with good handling. It stacks up well by the standards of the class in safety and driver aid technology and it too has the i-Cockpit.

Peugeot 2008

As with most other manufacturers, Peugeot has used its smaller hatchbacks as the base for a more profitable SUV or cross over and the 2008 is the first in its range. Mechanically similar to the 208, this compact SUV is a multiple award-winner and a strong seller in what is today a critical sector of the market. Like other Peugeots it gets the PureTech engines and depending on the spec level, voice activated sat nav and infotainment.

Peugeot 3008

Peugeot’s star car, the 3008 SUV has won 45 international awards since its launch and was named European Car of the year in 2017. Road testers and owners have praised its looks, practicality and boot space, the ride and handling, its safety features, its reliability and build quality.
