About Nissan

The company today known as Nissan has been through a few iterations since starting production before World War One, previously being called Datsun and surviving various financial crises by forming alliances with other manufacturers such as Renault. It has particularly strong links with the UK. In 1990 it opened its European Technical Centre in Bedfordshire, followed by its design office which it transferred from Germany to London in 2000 and of course, it has its factory in Sunderland. This is the biggest ever car plant in the UK, the fastest in UK automotive history to reach the million mark with one model, the Qashqai, and since the first Bluebird rolled off the assembly line in 1986, almost eight million more have followed it from there.

Nissan was a pioneer in the world of electric cars and is the market leader, it is credited with kick-starting the mainstream cross-over/SUV market with its Qashqai and remains a major player in that sector, has demonstrated that it can build sports cars to rival the likes of Porsche and its Micra has been a central model in the city car market throughout its various generations. This year Nissan unveiled its global plan to move into the next era for car companies which will be forced to adopt more socially and environmentally responsible ways.

Popular Nissan Cars

Nissan Micra

The latest Nissan Micra has been completely rejuvenated and is a world apart from the rather dowdy and uninspiring earlier models it replaces. The new Micra has sharp, eye-catching looks inside and out and is designed to have a more vibrant character and much more flair. Matching the extravagant looks is an all-new chassis which makes the Micra fun and pleasant to drive and be in. It is good over bumps and poor road surfaces but handles well too. In a fiercely competitive sector of the market the Nissan Micra is a strong contender for class honours.

Nissan Juke

With looks said to be inspired by a rally car, the Nissan Juke certainly has one of the more distinctive appearances on our roads. Now a firm favourite in the compact SUV or cross-over sector, the Juke is a small car with a big heart. A short wheelbase and raised ride height would not normally make for a car that rides or handles well but the Juke is both entertaining and surprisingly civilised to drive. Interior space is limited by its small dimension and sloping hatchback panel but it is no worse than others in this class.

Nissan Qashqai

Another continuing success story for Nissan and a car that is the reference point for just about everything else in its class, the Qashqai is a brilliant mid-size SUV built in both five or seven seater form. Despite much more competition, the Qashqai is still more than capable of holding its own and the latest generation car is ahead of most for its cabin sophistication and driving behaviour. It helps that Nissan has a UK development centre so its cars can be tuned for our roads and the Qashqai generally performs well.

Nissan Leaf

One of the pioneers of the electric car market, the LEAF is a UK-built car powered entirely by batteries and a leading car in this emerging market. Nissan claims a range on a full charge of around 230 miles, but real world driving indicates a figure of around half that which is still more than enough for most commute journeys. Key to its success is that it’s now commanding more interest and demand on the second hand market and sales there will improve its residual values, making a new one cheaper to buy and run.
