About Mercedes

What is widely acknowledged as the world’s first motor car was made by Carl Benz in late 1885 and a year later he filed a patent for a ‘vehicle with gas engine operation’. It was only a three wheeled device but that was the forerunner of the cars we drive today. As has been the way throughout the development of the motor car, one was soon entered into race by auto entrepreneur and early car salesman, Emil Jellinek, whose daughter was named Mercedes….and a legend named after the two pioneers was born. Mercedes-Benz is now a byword for solid and reliable engineering, for building luxury and prestigious cars. It has an excellent record in pioneering safety systems. In the 1950s it designed door hinges that would neither fly open nor jam in an accident,

in 1978 it fitted the world’s first digitally operated and reliable anti-lock brake system, three years later it became the first car maker to fit an airbag linked to seat belt tensioners and today it is at the forefront of driver assistance and anti collision systems as the world moves toward fully autonomous and self-controlling cars. In the meantime, Mercedes-Benz makes cars for every sector of the market, from city cars to supercars, MPVs and SUVs, hatchbacks, saloons, coupes and estate cars. One thing of which the company is proud and which sets it apart from so many rivals. Ever since that very first car was made, the company has always made enough money to not need to be bought out by a larger group and so it retains its independence.

Popular Mercedes Cars

Mercedes A Class

The Mercedes-Benz A Class was the tenth best selling car in the UK in 2017, comfortably leading the market for premium-badged compact hatchbacks. The latest A Class is the third generation, it is a lot sportier in its styling and packed with Mercedes’ renowned chassis, engine, safety and connectivity technology. Because it is so popular, its residual values are strong and that makes a very affordable car for someone aspiring to own a Mercedes. It has advanced petrol and diesel engines and to match key rivals, the BMW M135i and Audi RS3 models, you can buy a Mercedes A Class AMG 4Matic which has ferocious performance.

Mercedes C Class

Despite the headlong rush into SUVs, the Mercedes-Benz C Class saloon still managed to be a top ten seller in the UK during 2017, ending the year in ninth place. That is testament to the enduring appeal of the C Class in the compact executive saloon market which is still a big sector for prestige manufacturers like Mercedes, Lexus, Audi and BMW. Mercedes is due to introduce a heavily revised and facelifted C Class in 2018 which will see more plug-in hybrid engines and a massively updated interior where, among other changes, the infotainment system should be the same as in the S-Class, the company’s biggest saloon. The C Class’s core strengths have remained unchanged through several generations, giving drivers a 24 carat build quality, a choice of models ranging from luxury themed to genuine high performance and the latest in safety, engine and cabin technology.

Mercedes E class

The Mercedes-Benz E Class is one stop down from the ultimate in the company’s saloon car range and for many it is the perfect compromise. It is near enough to the S Class to give little away in terms of luxury and sophistication, but far enough away in price to make it better value for money. The current E Class is the fifth generation and has more athletic styling than earlier models, although it tends to favour luxury more than giving a sporty drive, something where the BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF are better. Mercedes is now making the E Class in saloon, estate and the crossover All Terrain estate versions with a choice of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines.

Mercedes GLA

Mercedes has a full range of SUVs starting with the GLA, which is one of the sleekest looking in this fast developing sector of the market. Its crossover model is based on the A Class hatchback but sits higher off the road and gives the driver a better view of  the road. The GLA is pitched against other premium names in the compact SUV sector such as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3 and the most recent arrival to the market, the new Jaguar E-Pace. Being  an SUV, it will ride on bigger wheels and tyres than the hatchback it is based on. For example, taking a mid range A150 Elegance SE hatch that can use a 205/55 R16 tyre, whereas the equivalent GLA is fitted with 215/60 R17 tyres.

Mercedes S Class

The S Class is Mercedes-Benz showing the world what it can do and the impact of that far outweighs the number of sales it generates. The halo effect of the S Class trickles down throughout the rest of the Mercedes range, all the way to the A Class hatchback, and puts extra polish on every car with the Three Pointed Star badge. Car testers say the Mercedes S Class is easily good enough to challenge the likes of Bentley in the chairman’s class saloon market. Recently updated, the S Class is the first to be designed in long wheelbase form first, rather than stretching the main chassis, which underlines the fact that many of them are sold to people who prefer to sit in the back and be driven, rather than drive.

Mercedes SLC

The Mercedes SLC is its entry level coupe convertible, a two seater roadster with a clever folding metal roof that lowers into sunshine mode in less than 20 seconds and at speeds of up to 25 mph. Having the security of a full metal roof but also the fun factor of a drop top means the SLC is a best-of-both-worlds sports car and it is an affordable entry level model to the Mercedes two seater car range. The Audi TT is a little sharper in the handling and the BMW Z4 arguably a little more rakish in its looks but the Mercedes SLC is still a strong contender in this sector of the market.
