About Land Rover

Land Rover has been perfectly placed to capitalise on the boom in SUV sales around the world and backed by the billion-plus pound investment of its owners, Tata Motors, has produced the models people want.

Together with its sister company, Jaguar, the organisation sold more than 620,000 cars globally in 2017. Land Rover now has six models in its range with the recent addition of the Range Rover Velar as it continues its expansion in the premium SUV sector.

Popular Land Rover Cars

Discovery Sport

The Land Rover Discovery Sport replaced the now discontinued Freelander model and is based on the Range Rover Evoque. It is the manufacturer’s entry level car and makes Land Rover ownership accessible to a wider audience. It is a seven seater and as with any of the company’s products, has genuine go-anywhere capability and remains popular with caravan owners who appreciate its towing capacity.

Discovery

Although the current fifth generation Land Rover Discovery has slightly more flowing lines and styling, there is still an element of the classic, square shape of a genuine off-roader. Its performance lives up to that and the Discovery is as tough and capable in extreme terrain as you will find and yet can still sit seven people in comfort. If you do want to go slightly off-road but not mountaineering, Land Rover says that Mud and Snow tyres – marked as M + S on the sidewall – will give you a tyre that is suitable for that and our winters.

Evoque

The original Evoque marked a step change in Range Rover’s styling as it dropped the rugged and functional look in favour of something far more stylish and urban in its appeal. The car was an overnight success and that formula has continued into the current version which looks very similar but with the benefit of the latest engines and chassis, giving a much more refined drive.

Velar

A new addition to the range and filling the price gap between the Evoque and the Sport, the Velar is far more on-road focused than off, and shares a lot of its underpinnings with Jaguars. The Velar is a large and modern SUV with a luxurious interior and very sophisticated cockpit in terms of driver aids and connectivity – but that is to be expected. What is not is its low-slung appearance in the showroom, although this is partly because its air suspension rises slightly once you get going. It will perform as well off-road as any owner is likely to want but despite its size it feels the most car-like product yet to wear the Range Rover badge.

Range Rover Sport

The forerunner to this model was a proper luxury off-roader, but to keep up with the times and fend off challenges for best-in-class honours from the Audi Q7 or Porsche Cayenne, the all-new Range Rover Sport is built around a lightweight aluminium chassis rather than a traditional steel one. The diet has been successful and this car is up to around 400 kgs lighter than the last Sport. Shaving so much weight from the basic structure has allowed the engineers to add more where the customer want it, in the interior and on luxury trim. It is a seven seater and one of the key appeals of the Range Rover Sport is its unfussed ride. Sitting on air springs and with 19 inch wheels as standard (options go up to 21 inch rims), it makes our rough road surfaces virtually undetectable for the passengers. It is very quiet and the engines have so much torque that it can cruise along at low revs with ease. For some critics, this is the best all-round Range Rover.

Range Rover

Back in 1970, the first Range Rover invented the market for 4x4s which would go anywhere and over any terrain, but would also whisk its occupants around in every bit as much comfort and refinement as the best top end saloons. Now approaching the half century, this flagship model remains true to that original formula but perhaps emphasising even more the luxury environment you find when you open the doors and step inside. It would take a remarkably good motor car to provide more than the Range Rover does with its hand crafted interior, trimmed with fine materials. It is a very big vehicle but one that is remarkably easy to hustle on even tight B roads and it comes into its own on long distance journeys where you should be able to step out feeling as fresh as you started. The Range Rover is the pinnacle of the modern prestige SUV market.
