About Ford
From its origins which can be traced back as far as 1896, Ford is among the world’s oldest and certainly best known car manufacturers and today operates in every market with products ranging from superminis to SUVs to supercars. With a couple of exceptions, Ford sells in the mid-market range of the various sectors it builds cars for but if there is one thing for which the brand is renowned, it is that time and again it builds the best handling cars. When the original Ford Focus arrived it proved beyond argument that family hatchbacks can handle like a dream and that has remained true of every generation since.
The Fiesta is commonly held to have the best chassis in its class, the S-MAX holds the same reputation in the big MPV market and Ford holds this fine reputation in most of the categories it sells in. Many of its products have indeed defined their markets; the Transit is a byword for the medium sized van sector and its ST products do the same for the performance end of their respective classes. Ford has one of the biggest dealer networks which makes buying and servicing much easier and it is no surprise that it is the top selling brand in the UK.

Ecosport
The Ford EcoSport is the Blue Oval’s contender in the huge and vital compact SUV market and is built around the Fiesta chassis. It has numerous selling points including being powered by the extraordinary 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, a unit that has been voted a winner in the International Engine of the Year awards no fewer than six times. Depending on the model the EcoSport runs on 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels.
KA+
The Ka+ is Ford’s city car and it is ideal as a second car or urban runaround. It is smaller than the Fiesta on which it is based but has decent head room in the back and good handling, it is seen as a rival to cars like the Skoda Citigo. There is not as much choice in the Ka+ range as there is with the Fiesta, notably in the engine department where you can only have a 1.2 petrol unit. It runs on 195/55 tyres.
Fiesta
The Ford Fiesta has always been found at or towards the top of the UK’s best selling cars for some 40 years and the latest generation now in the showrooms is a car fundamentally overhauled from its ageing predecessor. It needs to compete against the impressive all-new VW Polo or SEAT Ibiza which have moved the goal posts for the supermini sector. Ford’s response has been to make this Fiesta the safest, the most fuel efficient and best connected yet. It is roomy, comfortable and with more than ten trim and spec options to choose from, taking you from the economy, to luxury, to the high performance cars – there is plenty of choice.
Focus
Long the class leader but now facing stiff competition from the VW group cars, the Ford Focus is a mid-size family hatchback or estate car which has been updated to meet and match the new threats to its supremacy. There is a huge variety of Ford Focus models in trim and engine with powerplants ranging from the amazing 1.0 litre EcoBoost to the mighty 350 PS Focus RS capable of 165 mph. Successive generations of the Ford Focus have been renowned for their best-in-class chassis and ride/handling dynamics, but other cars have caught up with the Ford and it faces strong challenges from others vying to be the ultimate all-round family hatchback.
B-MAX, C-MAX, S-MAX
Ford’s MAX series is the name it gives to its MPVs which are available in three sizes, from the five-seater B-MAX to the mid-range C-MAX, which comes in either five or seven-seater versions (the Grand C-MAX), and up to the S-MAX, the biggest and another seven seater. Being MPVs, the priority is for them to perform as practical family carriers but with all three models Ford has also managed to give them some of the handling flair for which its cars are known. The big S-MAX in particular is regarded as having extraordinary verve for a car of this size and its driving behaviour fits in well with the sporty looks.
Kuga
Ford’s mid-size SUV was facelifted in 2013 and the car, now on sale and competing against rivals such as the Mazda CX-3 or VW Tiguan, is the second generation. The Kuga plays to Ford’s traditional strength of having a sophisticated chassis and some decent engines with the 2.0 litre diesel probably more suited to the job of powering it than the 1.5 EcoBoost petrol unit, even if that is more tax-friendly for company car drivers.
Mondeo
Once a mainstay of the company car market, the Mondeo has suffered like every other mid- size saloon car as drivers migrate to SUVs. And just as with the Vauxhall Vectra it has suffered even further with customers finding that more prestigious German rivals are affordable on monthly-based finance packages. The Mondeo is still an excellent car, very comfortable to sit and ride in, fitted with impressive engines and infotainment/connectivity features. Because it is facing an uphill battle for sales in the current market, it is available at some amazing prices.
