At Tyres On The Drive, you can get your new Abarth tyres fitted as early as the next day, and at a time and location that’s convenient for you.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of engineer and racing driver Carlo Abarth setting up his company producing small and light but powerful and fast cars and today it is the high-performance brand of Fiat. Carlo had a philosophy of making small cars go very quickly and while he did make his own racing cars, Abarth really made its name with the highly tuned versions of the little Fiat 500 he produced in the 1960s, which often humbled more potent cars on race tracks and rally stages.
His rear-engined cars soon became a force to be reckoned with and the company emblem of a scorpion is entirely apt for like them, Abarths too have a sting in the tail! Abarth worked on the whole car, developing the engine, gearbox, brakes, tyres and steering and it is an ethos which serves the company well today with its range of the Fiat 500-based hatchbacks and 124 Spider two-seater convertible.
Based around the Fiat 500, these come in a variety of power outputs from its 1.4 litre engine, from 135 hp up to 190 and with either manual or semi-automatic gearboxes. They use 16 and 17 inch rims with 195/45 and 205/40 tyres respectively.
Weighing just over 1,000 kgs and with 170 hp from its turbocharged 1.4, this two-seater soft top has among the best power-to-weight ratio of any in its class and with a limited slip differential and rear-wheel drive it has the handling to match its straight line performance.
