As anyone who’s into F1 can tell you, tyres have a huge part to play in every single race: whizzing around at speeds of over 200mph, it’s hardly surprising.
What is surprising though, is that the differences between the tyres used in the world’s biggest motorsport and those found on your average household motor aren’t as great as you might have first thought – especially as you can get your hands on tyres crafted by the F1 tyre brand, Pirelli. But what exactly can we learn from F1?
Feeling the pressure
At last year’s Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg were investigated by the FIA following news that their tyre pressures were slightly down before the race. Although nothing came of said investigation, the episode can be used to highlight the importance of nailing the right tyre pressure – whether you’re lining up on a starting grid at Monza or simply nipping to Aunty Sue’s for a cuppa.

Each tyre on your car plays a vital role in keeping you on the road – and a tyre that’s over or underinflated could impact on your safety, as well as your fuel economy.
How do I fix it?
In almost every car’s manual, you’ll be able to find out the recommended PSI for your tyres, which you can then check using a standard airline at your local petrol station or garage.
Foot off the throttle
Each race, every Formula One team adapts a strategy that they hope will help them achieve their respective goals.
As the single biggest performance variable, tyres play a huge part in any strategy. How a driver drives has a direct impact on the lifespan of their tyres – meaning that no matter how much they want to, they can’t drive at full throttle for every single lap.
The same rule applies outside of F1 too. If you were to do a wheel spin at every junction and push the brake pedal to the floor every time you wanted to slow down, your tyres would last nowhere near as long as they ought to.
Obviously, no tyre can go on forever, and natural wear and tear is always going to happen. If you’re looking at getting the most out of your current set though, it might be worth adopting a strategy of your own.
Right job, right tyres
Pirelli, the current supplier of tyres for F1, have more tyres available than you could shake a stick at. From slicks to wets, medium compounds to super softs, there’s a different tyre for every single climate, weather condition and track surface – and picking the right set can be the difference between finishing first, and finishing last.
You wouldn’t see an F1 team using slick tyres on a soggy day at Silverstone, so why should you be any different? No, we don’t expect you to change your tyres every time the weather changes, but to stay as safe as possible, it might be worth considering fitting a set of winter tyres around the October mark, and summer ones nearer April or May.
