When the possibility of Tyres On The Drive sponsoring a car in the 2019 ST-XR Challenge was discussed earlier this year, we jumped at the chance.
Not only is the ST-XR Challenge a fantastic amount of fun (not to mention fast), we’ve got a former champion in our midst, in the form of our very own Greg Speight. A dream combination!
Representing Tyres On The Drive in style
The championship sees competitors ragging it round the track in a broad range of models from Ford’s back catalogue. Greg will be racing in his Fiesta XR2, now fully liveried up in glorious Tyres On The Drive green and black! The cars on circuit are modified versions of vehicles many of our customers drive, but we wanted to stand out from the crowd with our team car. We got our design team on the case and it was mission accomplished!
A custom paint job and pre-season overhaul
We partnered with a respected UK-based specialist paint shop and a sign writer to turn our exciting design into a finished reality.
- We determined the type of paint we wanted to use to create our luminous bright green colour
- The vehicle trim was sanded down
- It was then wiped down with thinners to remove dust and particles
- It was primed and then sanded again until smooth
- 3-4 layers of the topcoat were applied
- Lacquer was applied and the body kit was buffed with a buffer
- Finally, we proudly added Tyres On The Drive branded stickers as a finishing touch
We think you’ll agree that the car is looking fantastic, but it’s more than just a fancy paint job. It’s had some pre-season TLC ahead of the first race at Oulton Park on the 13th April – a race it won around the Fosters circuit at Oulton Park in 2017. The pre-season checklist includes:
- Gearbox re-build
- Quick shift modification installation
- Front suspension upgrade
- Front wheel bearings replacement
- New brake discs and brake pads
- New fire extinguisher plumbed in
- New battery
The Tyres On The Drive car has been painted, maintained and tested at Oulton Park, posting some pretty promising lap times! We’re ready to go! “I’m really excited to kick off the new season with all of the changes we’ve made to the car in preparation, and it’s also really exciting to have the backing of Tyres On The Drive. Everyone loves the finished product, but it’s very likely this will be the best it looks all season! Having won the championship in 2016 I’m hoping to be competing at the front again this year.” Greg commented ahead of his first race. So, where will you be able to watch our champion driver and Tyres On The Drive sponsored car this season? There are three appearances at the home circuit of Oulton Park, as well as single visits to Croft, Anglesey and Mallory Park. With 14 rounds across 6 meetings, plus qualifying sessions, there’s plenty of time to admire the car and the skilled driving of our own Greg Speight! Greg also posts his in-car GoPro race edit from each race on YouTube and there are often highlights of half the events televised on Frontrunner (Sky 431 and Freesat 250). The first meeting of the season is around the Island circuit layout at Oulton Park on Saturday 13th April. To find out more and book your tickets, click here.
