Labelling of tyres from 1st July 2012


In 2009 the design of labels for tyres were approved. These labels will indicate the performance of passenger car and van tyres available on the European market. The labels will improve information supplied to customers with regards to safety (wet grip) and environmental matters (fuel efficiency and external noise).

This will come into force from 1st November 2012 and will apply to tyres manufactured from 1st July 2012. The regulation does not apply to tyres that have been re-treaded, studded, marked “for competition use” or to certain professional off road tyres.

 


1. The rolling resistance (from A-G); contribution of the tyre to fuel efficiency

2. The level of wet braking (from A-G); only applicable to passenger car tyres at the moment

3. The level of external noise emitted by the tyre




Fuel Consumption

The difference in fuel consumption between a car fitted with A or G class tyres is around 0.5ltrs per 100km
·    Around 80ltrs of fuel saved (per year)
·    Around £100 savings (per year) for a petrol-engined car
·    Not only is this a significant saving for the customer but it also has an important environmental benefit as CO2 emissions are reduced by 12g/km
 


Wet Braking

The difference in wet braking distance between a car fitted with A or F class tyres is over 10 metres, which is equivalent to 2 car lengths.




Exterior Noise

Traffic noise is a major source of nuisance. The lower part of the label shows the level of exterior tyre noise emitted from the vehicle expressed in decibels.
